The modern automatic transmission is by far, the most complicated mechanical component in today's automobile. Automatic transmissions contain mechanical systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and computer controls, all working together in perfect harmony which goes virtually unnoticed until there is a problem. Few transmissions have drain plugs to drain the old fluid. In order to get the fluid out, the technician removes the transmission oil pan. This is quite a messy job and generally not recommended for the casual do-it-yourselfer. Even if the transmission has a drain plug, the only way to also change the transmission filter is to remove the pan. When the pan is down, the technician can check for metal shavings and other debris which are indicators of impending transmission problems.

- *Note: When servicing a hybrid vehicle, it is usually necessary to remove the trunk access panel in order to gain entrance to power supply, shut off and reconnection. Additional service fees may apply.
Automatic transmission gears deliver power from the engine to the drive wheels. Over time, the fluid inside the automatic transmission degrades. Manufacturers often recommend replacement at intervals stated in years of service or miles of driving. The interval may be shorter for severe use. Replacing transmission fluid at the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service intervals improves lubrication and helps to maximize the life of the transmission.
Manual transmissions need just as much (if not more) TLC as automatic transmissions. Physically shifting through gears puts normal wear and tear on the clutch pedal and other components. While hands-on driving is fun, be sure to bring your car into Tire 4 Less for scheduled maintenance and attention.
